Compare The Volvo S60 vs. The Competition

Volvo S60 vs. Audi A4, BMW 330, and Mercedes-Benz C 300: Compare Compact Luxury Sedans near Orlando and Sanford

Offering executive accommodations, engaging driving dynamics, and a wealth of premium amenities, the Volvo S60 certainly lives up to its "Luxury Sport Sedan" billing. Of course, Orlando drivers have no shortage of options in the search for a luxury compact car. But with the refinement and sophistication of Volvo's signature Scandinavian design and craftsmanship, the S60 is one of the segment's most appealing nameplates. Here's a quick look at how it compares to three of its most prominent class competitors: the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C 300.

Volvo S60 vs. Audi A4

Performance: The Volvo S60's standard B5 powerplant is a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that sends 260 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. A standard 48V mild-hybrid (MHEV) system helps the energetic engine achieve an EPA-estimated 30 mpg in combined city/highway driving. The S60 also offers Volvo's prodigiously potent plug-in powertrain, Recharge, producing 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque and enabling an estimated 22 miles of electric-only range (69 MPGe).

The Audi A4's base 40 TFSI powertrain falls behind, generating 201 hp and 236 lb-ft and achieving an estimated 29 mpg combined. The A4 offers an optional upgraded 2.0 turbo-four that makes 261 hp, but a plug-in hybrid is unavailable.

Driver Assistance: The Volvo S60 demonstrates Volvo's renowned commitment to safety by equipping a full roster of IntelliSafe driver aids on every trim level. All models come standard with:

  • Volvo City Safety (forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking)
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™ )
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keeping Aid (lane-departure warning and lane-departure mitigation)
  • Road Sign Information
  • Rear Park Assist
  • Automatic high beams

The Audi A4 comes standard with collision mitigation and lane-departure warning. The remaining driver aids require an additional package or higher trim level.

Standard Features: In addition to equipping more standard safety features, the Volvo S60 also includes many amenities that are only available as options on the Audi A4, if they're offered at all. Examples include 18-inch wheels, a 12-inch digital instrument panel, steering adaptive headlights, and a panoramic sunroof.

Volvo S60 vs. BMW 3 Series

Performance: The Volvo S60 (260 hp) and BMW 3 Series (255 hp) have similarly matched standard 2.0L turbo-four powertrains. Both models also offer available PHEV options. However, the S60's twincharged plug-in powertrain (400 hp, 472 lb-ft) significantly outguns the turbocharged PHEV of the 3 Series (288 hp, 310 lb-ft). The BMW M340i's turbocharged V6 (382 hp, 369 lb-ft) is less powerful, less efficient, and more expensive than the S60 Recharge.

Driver Assistance: The Volvo S60 comes standard with more than seven IntelliSafe driver aids, providing extra security, confidence, and convenience no matter which trim level you select. The BMW 3 Series base tier is sparsely equipped in comparison, with only forward collision mitigation. To get the rest of the S60's standard safety features on the 3 Series, you'll have to add multiple options packages.

Standard Features: The Volvo S60 provides many more amenities for your money. Even with a lower MSRP, the Volvo S60 equips features like a larger central touchscreen, a larger digital instrument cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless proximity entry, and a panoramic sunroof. All these and more require a higher trim level or extra package on the BMW 3 Series.

Volvo S60 vs. Mercedes-Benz C 300

Performance: The Volvo S60 and Mercedes-Benz C 300 are motivated by similar MHEV turbo-four plants, generating 260 and 255 horsepower, respectively. However, the S60 is also available with Volvo's robust and efficient Recharge plug-in hybrid powertrain (400 hp, 472 lb-ft), while the C 300 doesn't offer an optional upgrade.

Driver Assistance: The S60 and C 300 both come standard with forward collision mitigation and blind-spot monitoring. However, Volvo includes many more safety features as standard equipment that the C 300 does not, including lane-departure warning and mitigation, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors.

Standard Features: The 2022 Mercedes-Benz C 300 is fully redesigned for a new generation, yet still isn't as well-equipped as the Volvo S60. The S60 with available Premium Package provides many more features than the C 300's base tier for a lower MSRP. Highlights include a panoramic sunroof, steering-adaptive headlights and fog lights, wireless smartphone charging, and integrated Sensus navigation with traffic information.
